Raquel Duarte is a pulmonologist with academic training in Public Health and Health Economics. Previously she served as Secretary of State for Health of the 21st Portuguese Government. She is a Pulmonologist at the Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho Hospital Center. She is also a Guest Associate Professor at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto (ICBAS), and responsible for the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Infection by Mycobacteria, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, at the Associaso ITR Laboratory.

On the international scene, Raquel Duarte was Secretary General, Vice-President and, recently, elected President of the “Europe Region Officers International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases”. She is a member of the Disease Network Coordination Committee of the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) and was chair of the tuberculosis group of the European Society for Respiratory Diseases. Currently, she is secretary of “Assembly 10, Respiratory Infections”.

She is actively involved as national and international coordinator and co-coordinator of research projects in the area of ​​tuberculosis and other non-tuberculous mycobacteria.
